Horse Thief Lake, South Dakota, Courtesy of US Forest Service.
When I was about 12 years old at a church camp in the Black Hills of South Dakota there was a hike that could be made with other kids and camp counselors to Horse Thief Lake to go swimming. Part way there a camp counselor saw that I didn’t have tennis shoes on and sent me back on my own to get them as they felt we should be wearing our tennis shoes to this lake. As I hurried back to the cabin on my own and then hurried back up the trail I eventually started to realize that I had no idea where I was going. There were trails splitting off in every direction and I felt scared and lost. I started to panic, but I stopped and asked for help. At that point and to my relief I could hear voices in the far distance of kids most likely swimming and having fun. So out of the total silence of the forest these voices came to me and I took the trail that led to the rest of my group. I was definitely helped that day by an angel and directed safely to my fun activities that were miles from our cabin.
